Those of us who favor very tall, very attractive, very talented, very blonde female singer-entertainers are in luck this weekend - two of the most impressive are live-streaming courtesy of Feinstein’s / 54 Below.

I’ve seen Luba Mason in all manner of settings, from full on musical theater (I can’t wait for Girl From the North Country to actually open on Broadway) to jazz and Pan-American and world music. (Her international background, Slovakian parentage and marriage to Panamanian superstar Ruben Blades are obvious influences there.) Yet of all the different kinds of projects Miss Mason does, this particular one-woman show has been, for me at least, the most satisfying. For the only instance in all the times I’ve seen her, she talks about her own life and experiences and her Broadway-centric career from Will Rogers Follies, How to Succeed in Business, The Capeman, Chicago, Jekyll and Hyde to many others.

Luba Mason was born Lubica Anna Gregusova, but Storm Large has always been Storm Large, although the name suggests a burlesque queen (or an X-Man). Her’s is a kind of rock-centric cabaret, fueled by her larger-than-life presence (where Ms. Mason is 5’ 10”, Miss Large is a full 5’ 12”), even larger voice, and uproarious, self-deprecating sense of humor. Each show tends to be soul baring, engaging, and not just titillating but titanically titillacious. She’s long since passed into the realm of those artists whom I want to see at every possible opportunity.  Together, these two evenings could be subtitled, "Twelve Feet of Blonde Greatness."
