Saxophonist Igor Butman is often described as the post-Soviet Wynton Marsalis. Like the JALC’s artistic director, Mr. Butman is not only a dynamite soloist (playing mostly tenor saxophone) but the leader of his country’s most celebrated jazz big band, the proprietor of his own venue and jazz support organization, and an eloquent spokesmodel for the music entire. This four-night run at the Blue Note is part of their first American tour in a while, and features two emerging stars, both competition winners, in guitarist Evgeny Pobozhly and singer Oleg Akkuratov. Anyhow, this is a great group to see live, especially if you happen to be wondering what contemporary Russians are doing when they’re not interfering in American elections. It’s a lot more exciting than just staying home and watching Nyetflix.
