E. Y. Harburg (1896-1981) known to everyone as “Yip,” was not only a brilliant lyricist and librettist, but his vast and rich canon incorporates three different careers at once. Harburg was not only a romantic and a sentimentalist, but also a comedian and a trickster and a master of lyrical slight-of-hand, Lastly, even though he had to strain the accepted boundaries of the popular song and the musical theater to do so, Harburg was also a tireless humanitarian, a rebel with a cause and an eternal optimist - who managed to put all of these impulses into a classic song like “Over the Rainbow.” In honoring Harburg, the long running Lyrics & Lyricists series is also celebrating itself, since Harburg himself was the star of the first ever L&L series 50 years ago in 1970. Featuring singers Mikaela Bennett, Laura Darrell, Clifton Duncan, Megan Sikora, and Nick Spangler.
