Celestial Being: The 80th Birthday Concert Celebrating Andy Bey
Birdland

Monday, December 9, 7PM

Nobody sings more movingly, more emotionally, more soulfully, and, most of all, more slowly than the remarkable man who, unbelievably, is about to turn 80. As I once wrote of Andy Bey, “He takes a song everybody knows and completely retools it via harmonic redecoration and elaborately conceived vocal effects: after listening to Bey’s treatments of chestnuts like ‘You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,’ ‘I’ll Remember April,’ and ‘Pick Yourself Up,’ even such old friends as Cole Porter and Jerome Kern start to seem like strangers in a half-remembered dream.” This promises to be a spectacular salute to one of the great living jazz singers, and while the guest stars have not been announced, one who is almost certain to appear is Mr. Bey’s prodigiously talented nephew, Darius De Haas, long a star in New York cabaret and musical theater circles. In any case, the main reason to attend is the formidable Andy Bey himself, the other guests are merely icing on his birthday cake.
