Daryl Sherman

with Scott Robinson and Boots Maleson: "Satchmo The Singer"
Birdland Theater

The Seine Bar in the Plaza Athenee Hotel
37 East 64th St.
ongoing

Perhaps the only veteran artist to alternate between piano bars and the more traditional jazz clubs, Daryl Sherman is always worth seeing - which is why it’s pleasing to report that she has a relatively new regular gig (at a classy new midtown hostelry - we would nothing less) as well as a one-night show at Birdland. In an age when most hotels are phasing out their traditional piano rooms, kudos to The Plaza Athenee for not only instigating such a venue but for lining up three of New York’s most talented and distinguished ladies - the other two are Kathleen Landis and Nancy Winston - to be featured therein. Ms. Sherman’s Birdland show, which co-stars the steadfast bassist Boots Maleson and the unpredictable multi-instrument maverick Scott Robinson, addresses a highly worthy topic, the singing side of Satchmo. Ms. Sherman will surely demonstrate that the Mighty Louis Armstrong was no less valuable to American musical history as a vocalist than he was as a brassman, and that the Satchmo songbook is likewise comparable to that of Fred Astaire or Frank Sinatra or any other musical icon.
