Peter Fonda - actor, writer, and counter-culture hero - lived long enough to see the 50th anniversary of his classic film Easy Rider and planned this celebration, but unfortunately passed in August, just a month before the epic event at Radio City was set to take place. In its day, Easy Rider was the movie that changed everything - it was not only the film that most accurately depicted the “born-to-be-wild” hippie lifestyle, of free love, drugs, rock and roll and an endless inner quest (to “find onself”) but it was the movie that hammered the final nail in the coffin of the old-time studio system, showing that an independent and personal film could attract more attention (and make more money) than the traditional Hollywood assembly-line. Easy Rider was also notable for its soundtrack, which featured a great many cutting-edge rock acts who, likewise, had also rarely been heard in film scores up to that point, among them, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, The Byrds, Steppenwolf and an original new song by Bob Dylan and Roger McGuinn. It’s that score that will be played live by a stellar group starring Mr. McGuinn himself, as well as John Kay and a raft of special guests under the direction of superstar producer T-Bone Burnett. Surely a mandatory event for all hipsters past and present.
