The 35th Annual "Jazz in July" @ 92Y

Jul 16, 2019

The 35th Annual “Jazz in July”
92nd Street Y (92Y)
1395 Lexington Avenue, (212) 415-5500
Tuesday July 16 through Thursday July 18, &
Tuesday July 23 through Thursday July 25

For 35 years now, this concert series has been a highlight of the summer (not to mention the rest of the year, especially with the departure of all the other jazz festivals that not-so-long-ago crowded the calendar in June and July). Host / producer Bill Charlap puts together a thoughtful series of shows that span the history of jazz, roughly from the 1920s to the 1960s, with an emphasis on melody, swing, and the Great American Songbook. This year’s line-up is an especially appealing one, particularly in terms of singers, the brilliant John Pizzarelli (July 16) and Cecille McLorin Salvant (July 17) haven’t been featured in the series as much as we would like, while the 25-year-old wondergirl, Veronica Swift (July 23), is making her 92Y debut, alongside the series’s regular star vocalist, the formidable Sandy Stewart (July 25). Every year, producer Bill Charlap includes at least one Latin program (this time it’s “Rhythm Warm, Rhythm Hot!,” Wednesday July 17), one piano-centric show (“Renee Rosnes & Bill Charlap: In The Key Of Us,” Wednesday, July 24), one evening devoted to an iconic jazz composer or soloist (“The Melodic Genius Of Clifford Brown,” Tuesday July 23) and one evening exploring the songbook of a great or near-great traditional songwriter (“Old Devil Moon: Swingin’ Through The Songs Of Burton Lane,” Thursday July 25). As always, I’m going to try and catch all six shows (look for the bald guy in Row K), but if you must prioritize, the shows with Mr. Pizzarelli and Ms. Salvant are undoubtedly going to sell out the most quickly, if they haven’t already.
