Rita Coolidge
The Iridium NYC
1650 Broadway, New York, NY 10019
(corner of 51st and Broadway)

Wednesday July 10 & Thursday July 11

From the beginning, Rita Coolidge’s music was simultaneously country-&-western and rock-&-roll, but having started in two musics at once, she just kept adding other genres to her shopping list, as in her inspiring take on the soul classic “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher”), her jazz projects (her moving interpretation of the Ethel Waters standard “Am I Blue?”), and the very personal music that she’s made in celebration of her Native American ancestry. Then there’s her prized status as a James Bond musical girl, singing her number one hit, “All Time High,” on the main titles of the 1983 Octopussy. (This was from the all-time high of the Bond film series, though the song itself was up to best of the spy movie themes; we can thank God and “Cubby” Broccoli that the main title theme did not actually use the film’s title.) She’s also prized as a team player and duet partner supreme, as borne out by her first rate work with Joe Cocker (Mad Dogs and Englishmen), Glen Campbell ("Somethin' 'Bout You Baby I Like") and, most famously, her long-time musical and marital partner Kris Kristofferson, on many singles and albums of classic duets. This is a rare appearance in the comparatively intimate space of a New York supper club, and should not be missed, especially if, as I’m hoping, she takes advantage of the setting and reprises the repertoire from her marvelous 1996 album Out of the Blues.
