The singer has copyrighted the term "Mixtura," making it a musical category that's legally all her own, but she needn't have bothered – it seems unlikely that some other vocalist will come along and try to do what she does, ie, to mix up songs and stylistic elements from the worlds of jazz, Broadway, pop, Latin and international music. (Sometimes she goes even further afield, as in "Don't Shoot The Hooey To Me, Louie," a 1970s show music approximation of 1940s jive, and she was a standout in the recent Girl from the North Country, which effectively transformed the Bob Dylan catalog into musical theater). Her new latest show is titled “Luba Mason - 5’ 10”,” and it is certain to feature the omnivorous musical qualities we have come to expect from her. We would expect the wife of the legendary Panamanian musical icon Ruben Blades to be well-versed in Pan-American music, yet her most moving number is "Motherland (Materinska Moja Rec)," which honors her Slovakian heritage.
