Jewish-Style Delis: The Heart of The Neighborhood in NYC

The Jewish-Style deli has long played a tremendous role in the development of NYC. The quintesential neighborhood deli was originally a place where immigrants from a variety of other countries could gather, enjoy familiar foods (and each other’s company) in what was otherwise an unfamiliar and often overwhelming city environment. This served as a very important social interaction as the Jewish population became acclimated to city life in New York and the delis became a very comfortable "home away from home."

Best Jewish Delicatessen NYC

The first Jewish-Style deli opened in New York City in the 1880’s. By the early 1930’s, there were more than 1,500 of them! Today, there are only about 20 left. As time went by and the pockets of the Jewish population in the Lower East Side and other neighborhoods dispersed throughout the area, the demand for the nostalgic gathering spots decreased.

Although the prominence of the Jewish deli may have dissipated significantly over the last century, the tender, juicy meat and large sandwiches they have become famous for still live on! The hot, thin-sliced corned beef and pastrami piled high on rye bread is a sight even the most hardcore vegetarian would have difficulty declining.

Sarge's Deli NYC

Our favorite deli of the few remaining in Manhattan is Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner, located on Third Avenue near E. 36th Street. Sarge’s is keeping the neighborhood deli concept at the forefront of their Murray Hill neighbors’ palate! It is nearly impossible to walk by and not stop in for something.

In addition to the unbelievable sandwiches, they also serve imported and pickled herrings, hand sliced and smoked salmon, sable, sturgeon and smoked whitefish, along with blintzes and many other Jewish and American specialties.

And you definitely don’t need a prescription for their cure-all Matzo Ball soup! There is also delicious New York cheesecake and a long list of assorted pies and desserts, while an array of fantastic salads and other vegetarian options are also among our favorites.
