KT Sullivan "I Can Cook: When Barbara Met Wally"

KT Sullivan (with Jon Weber)

The Beach Cafe
1326 Second Avenue
Saturday June 1 & Saturday June 8

The idea of KT Sullivan, the majordomo of the Mabel Mercer Foundation, addressing the songbook of the legendary Barbara Cook promises to be a conceptual meeting of two of the most imposing Broadway voices of our time (or, as I once said, “killer sopranos”). The late Miss Cook completely covered the map of modern musical theater, from her ingenue days as a Rodgers & Hammerstein protegee, to her later years as a concert headliner specializing in Sondheim - and virtually every other show tune that was worth singing. (And in her memorable final phase she even crossed over the boundaries into the realm of jazz and blues.) With her rich voice and even richer reserve of both emotion and humor, Ms. Sullivan is one of the few ladies singing today who do justice to the Barbara canon (ie, the book of Cook). A special treat is the actual arrangements written for the late Barbara by her brilliant musical partner, Wally Cook, lovingly recreated by virtuoso pianist Jon Weber (who will be playing on June 1; Matt Baker will accompany Miss Sullivan on June 8).
