Highlights In Jazz, “Salute to Randy Brecker”
Tribeca Performing Arts Center
199 Chambers Street – (212) 220-1460
Thursday, May 16

It's hard to believe I know, but trumpeter Randy Brecker turns 74 this year - and thus the enfant terrible of hard bop and jazz-rock fusion has now somehow mysteriously become an elder statesman of jazz.  (Alas, his equally talented younger brother, the late and much missed saxophone virtuoso, MIchael Brecker, never had the chance.) To honor this master musician, Highlights majordomo Jack Kleinsinger has organized two different and equally appropriate groups of players, whom he has designated, respectfully, as "millennials" and "masters."  The masters include a truly formidable rhythm section of pianist George Cables, bassist Buster Williams, drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd.  The one possible problem with Jack's designation is that the millennials, including the remarkable two-reed-identical twin team of Pete and Will Anderson and the high-octane bebop supersinger Veronica Swift, are also undeniably masters as well.  And, oh yes, the man of honor himself will be there, along with, as always, a surprise guest.
