Does anybody remember that moment in the mid-to-late-1960s, when every young female singer inclined towards Broadway and the traditional American songbook, was somehow classified in the general category of "Barbra Streisand type?" Lana Cantrell, Julie Budd, and Lanie Kazan, were all beautiful girls with slim figures and big voices; even Liza Minnelli, who, in those days, seemed to be more of a Barbra-ian rather than an acolyte of Judy-ism. (In fact, in her most notable movie role, the 1981 Devil and Max Devlin, Ms. Budd was cast against Babs's ex, Elliot Gould.) Yet Julie Budd, who made her first album at age 14 and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show at 15, has escaped the Streisand shadow and gone on to do consistently excellent work for the last 50 years. The full title of her latest show is “The Songs of My Life And The Composers Who Wrote Them,”and she has indeed promised an outstanding roster of mostly postwar songwriters, including Michel Legrand, Duke Ellington. Laura Nyro, Jule Styne, Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, Marvin Hamlisch, Carole King, Barry Manilow, Anthony Newley, Marc Shaiman, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Neil Sedaka, and Oscar Levant.
