The New York Pops: MOVIE MIXTAPE

Mar 12, 2019

The New York Pops: “Movie Mixtape”
Carnegie Hall
57th Street & 7th Avenue
Friday March 15

The New York Pops, under the direction of its ebullient conductor Stephen Reinke, has saluted movie music before - after all, this is a conjoined tradition which has brought out the best in both mediums for over a century now - and doubtless they will again. But this particular presentation promises to be, in Hollywood terms, an epic spectacular: for one thing, the Pops is currently on a roll - last months concert, a centennial salute to the legendary Nat King Cole, was one of their best ever - and for another, the roster of guest singers includes two contemporary vocalists who are alone easily worth the price of admission. There’s Laura Osnes, a Broadway ingenue whom you want to see in any role in any show (maybe even as King Lear - she’d have to grow a beard for that one) and Storm Large, who, as her name suggests, is a bigger-than-life entertainer whom I put in the same class as such uncategorizable fave funsters as Buster Poindexter and Puddles Pity Party. (My only regret is that in the more formal atmosphere of Carnegie, she will doubtless be more covered up than usual, and be clad in more than the “two band aids” that she customarily wears. Where’s my binoculars?) Also featured are two aces baritones: Mykal Kilgore and Ryan Silverman.
