Next time the alto saxophone chair opens up in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (not that I want to see the wonderful Sherman Irby go anywhere) my recommendation for the job is Patrick Bartley. Even more than post young musicians, Mr. Bartley is a true multi-generic, pan-stylist player, equally adept at New Orleans jazz or swing one minute and bebop or soul jazz the next: it’s hardly surprising that two of his major presentations at Dizzy’s thus far have been the music of Frank Trumbauer, the pioneering saxophone savant of the jazz age, and the post-bop master composer, bandleader, and alto heavyweight Julian “Cannonball” Adderley - two players who couldn’t be more inapposite - unless Mr. Bartley knows something that we do not, which is altogether likely.
But before his next Dizzy’s show on Friday January 4, Mr. Bartley headlines a special presentation this Saturday December 29, produced by the New York Hot Jazz Festival, in celebration of both the holiday season, as well as the music of Spencer Williams, one of the great New Orleans songwriters, whose music is as as well known and widely performed (“Mahogany Hall Stomp,” “Basin Street Blues,” “I Found A New Baby, Everybody Loves My Baby,” “I Ain’t Got Nobody”) even though Williams's own name is barely known to anyone. Along with Mr. Bartley and his Orchestra, the show will feature the excellent singers Queen Esther and Charles Turner, the sparkling new vocal trio the Copacetics (with Tatiana Eva-Marie and Sasha Masakowski) and the inspired young tap dancer Dewitt Fleming, Jr. It’s a great way to send the old year out with a bang.
