Sammy Davis, Jr. and Anthony Newley represent two completely unique, genre-busting icons of 20th century culture who had virtually nothing in common with anyone else - even each other - and yet their careers were intrinsically interconnected. The first was an African-American dancer-singer-comedian-impressionist and the second an early British rock star-composer-actor; both became Broadway stars and wound up getting on the American pop charts together, by means of Davis singing Newley’s classic songs, like “Once In a Lifetime” and “What Kind of Fool Am I.” As of now, I have not yet heard either Obba Babatundé, who celebrates the Sammy Davis legacy at Dizzy’s (with an all-star Harlem band) on Thursday, or Eddie Bruce, who sings the Anthony Newley songbook at Mama’s on Saturday, but both performers come highly recommended - and the intertwined songbooks of both of these 1960s landmark entertainers are well-worth further investigation.
