Steve Tyrell at The Cafe Carlyle

Nov 29, 2018

Steve Tyrell
The Café Carlyle
35 E 76th Street, (212) 744-1600
Through December 31

Not for nothing did Steve Tyrell become famous for singing in the Disney Father of the Bride movies: there’s something about his music that transforms a public venue, like a cafe or a nightclub, into an intimate space, like a living room or dining room, and a formal performance into a personal experience as warm as a family event, like a Thanksgiving dinner or, yes, a wedding. Even when you don’t know anyone in the house, by the end of the set you feel like you’re in a roomful of old friends. His current show, commemorating his 14th year at the Carlyle, contains a lot of familiar favorites, and he proceeds almost immediately to his signature song (from the first Bride picture), “The Way You Look Tonight,” because, he explains, he had just had a chance meeting with Steve Martin in the lobby. There’s also a generous amount of numbers from his current album, A Song for You, including what might be my single favorite song by him, Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You,” as well as my overall favorite Tyrell album, the 2008 Back to Bacharach (which draws on his long experience as an assistant-apprentice producer working with maestro songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David). Mr. Tyrell fills you with the holiday spirit without singing so much as a single Christmas song (it would actually seem redundant) and you leave feeling much happier than when you came in.
