Margi Gianquinto, A Centennial Tribute to Jo Stafford

Margi Gianquinto, “A Centennial Tribute to Jo Stafford”
Birdland
315 W 44th Street, (212) 581-3080
Thursday, November 1 (5:30PM)

Over the course of a three-decade career, there were at least four very different but interrelated Jo Staffords: the sultry-voiced torch singer, the swinging and sexy jazz contralto, the copiously-gifted harmonist, while the fourth was a radical pop music subversive who recorded under pseudonyms like “Cinderella G. Stump” and “Darlene Edwards.” (And there’s also the Jo Stafford who single handedly brought folk music into mainstream culture.) Thus somehow it seems appropriate that Margi Gianquinto, one of our more talented girl-singers-about-town, has taken all the time necessary - until the eve of the great lady’s 101st birthday - to put together an appropriate celebration of this most elusive of landmark interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Joining Ms. Gianquinto will be special guest singers Cait Jones and Danny Bacher (a conspicuous funster doubling on saxophone) and a special quartet to recreate a few of Stafford’s milestone performances with the Pied Pipers.
