Sock Hop Sundays & Disco Lives

Oct 16, 2018

Eric Silvey presents “Sock Hop Sundays” & “Disco Lives”
Iguana
240 West 54
Disco Lives: Wednesday October 17 & November 7
Sock Hop Sundays: Sunday October 21, November 11, & November 25

Impresario, producer, and promoter Eric Silvey is a master at creating something from nothing: he takes a big empty space (albeit with a wooden floor that’s perfect for dancing) and a deejay, and somehow fills it with over a hundred, happy, dancing people all having the time of their lives. His sunday night series is devoted to classic rock and R&B hits of the 1950s and ‘60s. (You would think this is self-explanatory. However, I had to find out the hard way that “sock hop” is just an expression, participants are actually encouraged to wear shoes - and this after I had already invested all of three bucks in a new pair of men’s hosiery. “LOL!” as the kids say.) The Wednesday evenings move the timeline up a decade or two and are devoted to Disco and related forms of 1970s.  For those of us who can't dance - I feel obligated to inform prospective partners that what I lack in ability I more than make up for in mediocrity - Mr. Silvey generously provides dance lessons at the start of each evening.  (Actually, come to think of it, you probably wouldn’t want to dance on a wooden floor in actual socks, I’m still picking the splinters out of my feet from the last time I tried that.)
