If you’re only in town for a few nights, and can’t decide if you’d rather go to a cabaret show or hear a jazz artist, Daryl Sherman relieves you of the responsibility of having to choose, since she neatly splits the difference between the two, and handily satisfies both sets of rules. A pianist, singer, and occasional songwriter and bandleader, Ms. Sherman is the living heir to the two late great ladies of this highly rarefied tradition, the sophisticated and swinging Barbara Carroll and the delightfully kooky, musically majestic Blossom Dearie. Ms. Sherman draws on the legacies, and repertoires, of both - and a great many others besides. Tuesday’s Birdland show (with guitarist James Chirillo and bassist Boots Maleson) celebrates a new album, Lost in a Crowded Place, and she’ll follow it on Wednesday, September 26, at Kitano (co-starring tenor sax giant Houston Person and bass avatar Jay Leonhart). Whether being silly or sophisticated, doing a song from Fats Waller or Noel Coward, she’s never less than thoroughly convincing.
