Salute to Russell Malone

Jun 20, 2018

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz presents
“Salute to Russell Malone”
Tribeca Performing Arts Center,
199 Chambers Street – (212) 220-1460
Thursday, June 21, 2018- 8 P.M.

Sometimes to best honor tradition, you have to break with it. When Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz series honors a living legend of the music, as they do once a year, it’s always been an elder statesman, feted by his colleagues and younger disciples. This Thursday’s salute to the 54-year-old guitar giant doesn’t completely reverse that equation, but it’s notable that one of the younger artists slated to perform at this Tribute to Russell Malone is, in fact, Russell Malone. And, for once, its the storied veterans, like saxophonists Houston Person (83) and Jimmy Heath (91), and his fellow guitarist Gene Bertoncini (81), who are coming out to pay tribute to him. Mr. Malone, whose playing displays a unique rhythmic drive as well as an abiding lyricism, is well worth it. Also appearing, such age-appropriate peers as vibraphonist Steve Nelson, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, bassist Luke Sellick, and drummers Willie Jones III and Lewis Nash.
