A. J. Lambert at Rough Trade NYC

What most people know about Angela Jennifer (aka “A. J.”) Lambert is her royal lineage: her parents were pop icon Nancy Sinatra and celebrated choreographer Hugh Lambert, and her grandfather was the legendary Frank Sinatra. What you might not know is that this esteemed representative of the Third Generation of the Sinatra Dynasty is an accomplished singer-songwriter and a veteran performer as well. Last August, Ms. Lambert gave an inspired performance at Feinstein’s, wherein she took us on a journey through all sixteen songs of what just might be Sinatra Senior’s most significant work, the 1955 In the Wee Small Hours. This Friday at Rough Trade, Miss Lambert will showcase the more contemporary side of her oeuvre, and will preview her forthcoming album, Careful You, which includes her thoughtful and imaginative recastings of contemporary songs such as “I Summon You” (by the well-known modern group Spoon), as well as such other 21st century icons as John Cale and TV On The Radio. (And yes, for us fans of the original Sinatra, she’ll throw us some of the worthier, underexplored corners of her grandfather’s legacy, like “Sleep Warm” and “I’ll Be Seeing You.”) It’s hard to think of any other performer who would be equally at home in the Broadway-centric Feinstein’s and the cutting-edge-ier downtown venue Rough Trade (it’s so far downtown it’s actually in Brooklyn!), but AJ Lambert has already proven herself a storyteller of uncommon ability.
