Highlights in Jazz presents Dick Hyman and Friends

Jack Kleinsinger’s Highlights in Jazz presents “Dick Hyman and Friends”
Tribeca Performing Arts Center,
199 Chambers Street – (212) 220-1460
Thursday, May 10, 2018, 8 P.M.

“Jazz happenings” like this used to be rather plentiful: five outstanding multi-generic masters, guys who easily cross the boundaries between New Orleans jazz, Swing, and Bebop, getting together for a jam session on old favorites, under the imprimatur of one of the all-time masters of jazz piano. The legendary Dick Hyman gets no shortage of opportunities to play at both the 92Y and Jazz at Lincoln Center, but now it’s rather rare to hear him leading an all star band like this one, starring clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski, trombonist and singer Wycliffe Gordon, bassist and songwriter Jay Leonhart, drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd. You’ll note that all four of these gentlemen are multi-instrumentalists, but while Mr. Hyman will probably only play the piano on Thursday (he’s also recorded extensively on organ), you’d have to gather ten other piano-players to do everything that he can do on the keyboard. Happy birthday both to Mr. Hyman, who just turned 91, and to producer-impresario Jack Kleinsinger, whose Highlights in Jazz series just turned 45 years old.
