If 2017 was the great year for jazz centennials (Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich) then 2018 is the major year for 100th birthday anniversaries of Broadway legends (Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Alan Jay Lerner). There will be other celebrations honoring the centennial of the legendary choreograph Jerome Robbins, but this show, created and hosted by Kathleen Marshall and produced by Deborah Grace Winer, has a particular focus: the idea is to look at how Robbin’s choreographer impacted the music of the classic shows he was working on, and so, indirectly, the emphasis is on music and singing rather than dancing - certainly a unique way to honor a great choreographer. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Ms. Marshall, who has been the directorial and choreographic force behind more hit revivals of classic shows than anyone, and she has lined up some great singers to work with: Matt Doyle, Aaron C. Finley, Beth Malone, and, most of all, the irrepressible Laura Osnes. Considering that Robbins worked not only with Bernstein but Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Jule Styne, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and many others, a Robbins centennial celebration is definitely something to sing about.
