THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI featuring Chris Washburne and Rags and Roots with Brianna Thomas

May 4, 2018

The Silver Screen Experience: "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" with Live Score
featuring Chris Washburne’s Rags and Roots with Brianna Thomas
The Bell House
149 7th Street, Brooklyn
Friday, May 4

The Catskill Jazz Factory is to be commended both for the wide range of jazz styles that they present (from New Orleans and hot jazz to bebop and post modern) as well as for the equally wide range of areas that they present them in, from various areas upstate to Manhattan and even Brooklyn. Trombonist-bandleader Chris Washburne also, famously, works in many jazz subgenres, and his Rags and Roots ensemble is notable for bringing a fresh approach to the performance of early jazz, ie, it’s distinctly not the musical equivalent of a civil war reenactment. As accompaniment to the classic 1921 German film, a pioneering work in the area of psychological horror and a near-century old movie that can still induce nightmares, Mr. Washburne has promised to use songs and music from that year as his starting point. Mr. Washburne’s sextet also costars two exceptional younger horn players, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci and Crescent City clarinetist Evan Christopher. The brilliant young singer Brianna Thomas is also a welcome part of the show, and furthermore, the Catskills Jazz folks are also presenting her at Mezzrow (163 West 10th Street) in a celebration of gospel great Mahalia Jackson, that is also more than worth catching.
