Lyrics & Lyricists: Lynn Ahrens - A Lyric Life
92nd Street Y (92Y)
1395 Lexington Avenue, (212) 415-5500
Saturday (May 5) through Monday (May 7)

Kudos to Ted Chapin, the new artistic director of 92Y’s long-running Lyrics and Lyricists series, for mounting a celebration of a contemporary Broadway librettist who’s not only still active, but who doubtless has many more Tony awards still ahead of her. Ms. Ahrens, who won a much-deserved Tony for Ragtime, one of the great musical plays of the current century, has been represented on Broadway in recent seasons by Rocky The Musical, Anastasia, and the ongoing revival of Once on This Island. Ms. Ahrens, herself a spry age 69, will personally host, and the roster of vocalists includes Nikki Renée Daniels, David Harris, Margo Seibert, Brandon Uranowitz, and Alton Fitzgerald White, all under the baton of musical directors Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Michael Gacetta. My only advance criticism is that the marvelous Broadway baritone and leading man Jason Danieley is participating, but, apparently, alas, only as a director; if I had my druthers, he’d come out and sing “The Wheels of a Dream” at the end of Act I.
