Yes, there are some people who only know Chip Taylor as 1. the singer-songwriter kid brother of beloved actor Jon Voight; 2. the folkster uncle of Angelina Jolie; and 3. the guy who wrote the big song in the first Deadpool movie. While that’s all quite correct, the larger truth is that Mr. Taylor is a first class guitarist and singer, whose most famous songs, “Angel of the Morning” (my favorite is the Nina Simone version) and “Wild Thing” are contemporary classics. Yet his whole catalog is worth hearing, as his latest album, A Song I Can Live With, which is full of such gnarly, intimate, and highly personal revelations as “New York Inbetween” and “Little Angel Wings,” aptly proves. If that don’t warm your heart, son, you ain’t been in love.
The other reason to catch Mr. Taylor tonight is the chance to check out a brand new venue in the heart of Times Square; up to now, I would have been willing to bet that Nashville surely has more jazz clubs than Manhattan has country and folk-centric venues. The new Opry Center Stage is the first “foreign outpost” of the venerable Grand Ole Opry, as well as New York’s major C&W-specific space, and it’s well nigh about time, I should say. (And in addition to all that, everybody’s talkin’ about how the Midnight Cowboy himself might put in an appearance tonight. Just saying.)
