The Musical of Musicals (The Concert): A Musical by Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell
The York Theater Company at St. Peter’s
619 Lexington Avenue, 935-5820
Monday, April 9, 3PM & 8PM

“Oh, What Beautiful Corn!” This 2003 concoction is the musical theater equivalent of what sports fans refer to as “inside baseball”: it’s a broad yet specific parody of five of the major stylists who have cast a giant shadow over the Broadway of the last 75 years: Rodgers & Hammerstein (“Corn!”), Stephen Sondheim (“A Little Complex”), Jerry Herman (“Dear Abby”), Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (“Aspects of Junita”), and John Kander & Fred Ebb (“Speakeasy”). Yet more than a simple spoof, the songs are both original (though authentic to the style of their subjects) and tuneful in their own right, and the jokes are plentiful and on-target. Overall, the production is never so “meta” that general audiences (who, for instance, may not have actually memorized the original cast albums to “Here’s Love” or “Bajour”) won’t find much to enjoy. Highly recommended.
