The Skivvies at the Green Room 42

Mar 31, 2018

The Skivvies
The Green Room 42
570 Tenth Ave
4th Floor inside Yotel
Easter Sunday Brunch, April 1

The Skivvies are a mashup on multiple levels, not only in the sense of the way they often throw together incongruous songs, show tunes and pop hits alike, into unexpected medleys, but in the way they juxtapose of eye-filling visuals with equally remarkable musicianship. As I wrote about this power duo (in 2015), “You'll come for the near-nudity but return repeatedly for the excellent music – and the humor. The Skivvies, are Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, a pair of harmony-singing instrumentalists with a highly distinctive musical style that sounds as good as it looks: her with bra, panties, heels, and cello; him with guitar, ukulele, and briefs. Guest stars (a few personal faves are Emily Bergl, Christina Bianco, Laura Benanti, and Morgan James) also adhere to the dress code, parading by in various combinations of underclothing and sleepware - but so far, thankfully, the audience has not been asked to get with the dressed-down program.” (If any of this sounds too good to be true, just check out the hundreds of videos of the duo and their guests posted on the the youtubes.) This Sunday, they’re helping christen what I’ve been told is a lovely and happening new performance space on Theater Row, for a 3PM show that can hardly be described as a “bottomless brunch.” (Indeed, with all the flesh on display, here’s hoping they won’t resist the temptation to sing “Keister Parade.”)
