You know Melissa Errico as one of the major musical theater leading ladies of our time - from Finian’s Rainbow, My Fair Lady, Passion, Do I Hear a Waltz?, and dozens of other classic shows (not to mention Dracula - The Musical). But what you may not be aware of is that she also delivers a brilliant, one-woman supper club show. Her recent all-Sondheim set at Feinstein’s 54 Below was remarkable for the way that she started with these infamously complex arias, written for specific characters and specific scenes, and transformed them into something incredibly intimate and personal. For her Birdland set, she’s promising not show tunes this time but Great American songbook classics from the interwar era, and there’s no doubt that she’ll make them seem like life lessons from her own story, imparted from friend to friend.
