You could call the Canadian jazz singer / pianist / superstar’s new album, Turn Up the Quiet, a return to form - except that all three albums that she’s released in this decade (the previous two being Glad Rag Doll, 2012, and Wallflower, 2015) are also among her best. More accurately, What Turn Up the Quiet actually is, is a return to the Nat King Cole-centric jazz standards that endeared her to us to begin with 20 years ago - the most recent song here is the 1953 mambo standard “Sway.” It’s also a return to the general sound of the King Cole Trio that she employed on her early albums, with emphasis on guitar (Russell Malone, Anthony Wilson, Marc Ribot), bass (Christian McBride, Tony Garnier) and her own piano. Where there are strings and orchestral elements, they’re strictly in the background, and the trio sound is in the forefront, right under her own distinctively smoky voice. Even the cover effectively evokes a 1950s Verve album, and the only curiosity that she’s left us to ponder is why she didn’t include the Ivan Lins song “Love Dance,” since that’s the one where the lyric line “Turn Up the Quiet” comes from. Listening to this wonderful sultry and romantic music, one wonders how Ms. Krall could possibly create such an intimate mood in the 2894 person capacity of the Beacon Theater - but having seen Ms. Krall live many times, I know that she’s a past master of at the art of making any space seem romantic.
