The Mabel Mercer Foundation presents
"That's Entertainment": Dietz & Schwartz & Friends
Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall
57th Street & 7th Avenue
Tuesday (June 20)

Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, who are best remembered today for the songs in Fred Astaire’s masterpiece movie musical The Bandwagon (1953), were the great music-and-words team of the Golden Age of the intimate revue - and occasionally book shows and films as well. Working together primarily in the 1930s and intermittently thereafter, they jointly crafted dozens of great songs that are regarded as musical theater, jazz, and cabaret classics: “Dancing In the Dark,” “You and the Night and the Music,” "By Myself," "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan," "Alone Together," "Something to Remember You By," "Haunted Heart," and "I See Your Face Before Me,” not to mention “Rhode Island is Famous for You” and one of the all-time great show biz anthems, "That's Entertainment."  Produced by KT Sullivan for the Mabel Mercer Foundation, performers include Seth Sikes, Celia Berk, Lauren Stanford, Frank Dain, Margi Gianquinto, Sidney Myer, Sue Matsuki, Alexis Cole, Danny Bacher, Darius de Haas, Karen Oberlin, Gary Crawford, Laurie Krauz, Marta Sanders, Mauricio Bustamante, Mark Nadler, and Madame Chairwoman herself. The songs of Schwartz and Dietz are full of brilliant moments, unexpected musical and lyrical twists and turns, that are designed specifically for knowing interpreters such as these to take advantage of. As with most songwriters of this era, you know their music better than you know their names, which is why this songbook concert is especially welcome.
