Lyrics & Lyricists: From Camelot to California - The Worlds of Lerner & Loewe
92nd Street Y (92Y)

From 1942 to 1960, the team of Alan Jay Lerner (lyrics and libretto) and Frederick Loewe (composer) were the only musical theater team to consistently challenge the unstoppable juggernaut that was Rodgers & Hammerstein for domination of Broadway. They wrote four classic shows (Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, My Fair Lady and Camelot, all of which were made into Hollywood epics, though not all equally successfully) and one movie musical masterpiece (Gigi) which have weathered the passing decades as good or better than anything else in the history of musical comedy. Now, even 70 years later, all of their classics are eminently revivable - and a new My Fair Lady is in the pipeline. This weekend, L&L meets L&L as musical director Rob Berman leads a Broadway-centric cast (Chuck Cooper, Lilli Cooper, Bryce Pinkham, Ryan Silverman, Lauren Worsham) through highlights of L&L’s classic shows, which will surely include their big hits (“On the Street Where You Live,” “They Call the Wind Mariah,” “If Ever I Would Leave You”) alongside some lesser-known gems from the Lerner-Loewe catalogue.
