See Antonia Bennett at the Cafe Carlyle in New York City!

May 24, 2017

The Café Carlyle
35 E 76th Street, (212) 744-1600
Through Saturday, June

Singer Antonia Bennett has a red-headed visual appeal that will remind some of a younger and jazzier Bernadette Peters, while her singing itself will more likely bring to mind the subtle, even minimalist approach of the late (and indeed great) Blossom Dearie. For her debut run at Cafe Carlyle, she’s abetted by a power trio helmed by Spike Wilner (an expert pianist all too rarely seen outside of the West Village, where he is the driving force behind two outstanding jazz venues, Smalls and Mezzrow), bassist Paul Newinsky and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. The program is all well-loved standards, though songbook devotees will appreciate the highly symmetrical arc connecting Mr. Wilner’s solo feature, “Tea For Two,” early in the evening, with Cole Porter’s “From This Moment On,” later on in the set, with its famous reference to “Tea for two songs.” Although on opening night, Ms. Bennett’s famous father, Tony Bennett, was in the house the main pop music icons whom she celebrated were Ella Fitzgerald (whose centennial she honored with “Hooray For Love”) and Frank Sinatra (with a subtle reworking of his 1961 arrangement of “Pennies From Heaven” from the Sinatra - Count Basie - Neal Hefti album). She closed with a highly intimate encore, “You Were Always on My Mind,” which fittingly brought us into a whole other area of popular music.
