Frankie Manning Birthday Bash 2017
David Berger's Sultans Of Swing featuring Hetty Kate
DROM
85 Avenue A (between 5th Street & 6th Street)
Friday, May 26th
In the unlikely event you don’t know, Frankie Manning (2014-2009) was the patron saint of swing dancing. In his youth, he was, in fact the greatest of all lindyhoppers, an opinion confirmed by several remarkable films that can still easily be viewed on youTube and elsewhere. Then, many years later, as an elder statesman, he was the foremost teacher of swing dancing, and the veritable Johnny Appleseed of the swing dance revival that took the world by storm at multiple moments in the 1990s and still later. To honor what would have been the Mighty Man’s 103rd birthday, the New York Hot Jazz Festival has assembled an unbeatable combination: David Berger’s Sultans of Swing, perhaps the greatest 1940s-style big band currently playing, and one of the world’s leading swing vocalists, Australia’s own irresistible Hetty Kate. Yes, I know everybody wants to flee from town immediately for the long Memorial Day weekend, but if you can force yourself to stick around until Saturday morning, you’ll find that it will be well worth the wait. (And if you’re back on Monday, Ms. Kate will be performing with guitarist Peter Bernstein and bassist Neal Miner in the intimate space of Mezzrow.)
