Abbey Lincoln Tribute Concert at The Apollo Theater NYC

253 W. 125th St., (212) 531-5305

Saturday (May 6)

By virtue of her singing alone, Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010) was one of the great ladies of jazz; a versatile stylist to be compared with Carmen McRae or Annie Ross. But as a songwriter, the late Miss Lincoln truly was in a class by herself, virtually the only heavyweight Diva (apart from, possibly, Peggy Lee) to spend her entire career continually writing new songs – many of which were excellent enough to actually be performed by other singers. In jazz, more than any other form of music, that is a major accomplishment all by itself. On Saturday, three of today’s contemporary, heavy duty divas – Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, and Esperanza Spalding, Grammy-winners all – will honor Lincoln’s amazing legacy. The whole event will be under the musical direction of drummer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington; come to think of it, the idea of an Abbey Lincoln songbook album would make a great idea for the next volume in Ms. Carrington’s highly successful Mosaic Project series.
