Without deliberately trying to, from the time he was a very young man (he wrote his first hit, “Up, Up and Away” when he was 19) up through his modern years as a veteran songwriter and ASCAP official, Mr. Webb is the only composer whose music could be sung by literally everyone, from Liza Minnelli to Willie Nelson to Beyonce. His songs defy all preconceived notions of stylistically boundaries, musical genres, and even generations. This 70th birthday event is timed not only to announce the publication of his excellent new book, The Cake and the Rain (which is, hardly surprisingly, one of the best music memoirs I’ve ever read) but to benefit Glen Campbell alzheimer’s foundation, I’ll Be Me. What makes Mr. Webb’s book so remarkable is the same talent that makes his songs great: the ability to take something personal, an experience, a feeling, a state of mind, and make it into something transcendentally universal – that everyone can related to and participate in.
