“Ella Fitzgerald Day” – Tuesday April 25 at the Rainbow Room, Rockefeller Center

Streamed live on ABC Digital

The big day at last is here! We have reached the 100th birthday of the greatest jazz singer of all time and the woman who did more than any other to define the parameters of what we call The Great American Songbook. It is now official: Tuesday, April 25, 2017, will be “Ella Fitzgerald Day” in New York, and to celebrate the Great Lady, there will be a special ceremonial event in the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center. The Mayor’s office will deliver a proclamation (read by Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin), and students from the Frank Sinatra High School will perform. Most importantly, Fitzgerald’s close friend and number one acolyte, the legendary Tony Bennett, will be on hand to present a new portrait of the iconic Ella (in case you didn’t know it, he’s a great painter as well as the world’s greatest living singer) and also to sing in her honor. What’s more, Tony’s son, media maverick Danny Bennett, who runs Verve Records, will be on hand to talk about new Ella releases for the centennial. This event, which begins at 10:30 AM on the actual birthday (Tuesday April 25) isn’t open to the public, alas, but it will be fully live streamed on ABC digital, so Ella Fitzgerald fans (and who isn’t) can participate on computers and smart phones all over the world.
