Paquito D'Rivera in Concert at 92Y in New York City

1395 Lexington Avenue, (212) 415-5500

Saturday, April 8

In a certain sense, Paquito D’Rivera was to the manner born to bring about an ongoing series of fusions of American jazz with music from the rest of the world. Coming of musical age in Havana he, was raised in the cauldron of Afro-Latin jazz, but even before he escaped from Cuba decades ago, he had long since mastered swing, bebop, and fusion as well, playing all these musics on both alto saxophone and his distinctive rosewood clarinet. This Saturday he unveils a new and even more ambitious jazz and world music fusion, incorporating classical strings, Cuban folkloric sounds, and, yes, this is the surprising part, traditional Chinese instruments. What will it sound like, I won’t even attempt to imagine. I can only hope it will be a sonic equivalent of all those wonderful Chinese-Cuban restaurants that once were plentiful all over Eighth Avenue and the upper West side, but my advice is to head east to 92Y on Saturday night and find out for yourself.
