Feinstein’s / 54 Below Presents Annette Warren, “I Ain’t Done Yet”

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance for New Yorkers to hear a legendary Hollywood singer (and occasional pianist). Born in 1922 in Cleveland, Annette Warren was a working vocalist all over Tinseltown Los Angeles for many decades, singing occasionally on recordings, but much more frequently on radio and then TV. It was in the movies, however, that she became best known – ironically, however, for being the anonymous singing voice of such non-singing leading ladies as Lucille Ball. To this day, millions know her rich sensual mezzo coming from the throat of “Julie LaVerne” singing the iconic “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” - in the hit 1951 film of Show Boat – yet few people realize that it’s actually Ms. Warren that they’re hearing, not Ava Gardner, who played the role on screen. Apart from her Hollywood legacy, Ms. Warren is a gifted keyboardist who also recorded an album of duets with her late husband, the celebrated piano soloist and accompanist Paul Smith (whose most famous collaborator, it must be admitted, was Ella Fitzgerald). Ms. Warren turns 95 this year, and while she has no plans to stop performing, this is the first opportunity I know of to catch her in the act in New York. So what are you waiting for?
