William Bell, best known for his many hit singles for the legendary Stax label (which was to Memphis what Motown was to Detroit) exemplifies the old school of singer-songwriters. Unlike the modern variety – those artists who limit themselves to singing their own music exclusively – Mr. Bell worked in a variety of situations. True, he’s celebrated for his own self-penned hits, liked his hit debut, “You Never Miss Your Water” (inspired by an old blues line also heard in W. C. Handy’s “Joe Turner Blues”). But along the way, he also recorded glorious versions of other people’s songs, like his deep soulful interpretation of Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Pheonix,” and at the same time, some of his songs became major hits and standards for other artists. His “Born Under a Bad Sign,” most closely associated with Albert King, is an all-time classic of the blues, famously also recorded by co-author Booker T. Jones as well as mainstream rock bands like Cream. Although he’s not known for singing “Bad Sign” himself, something tells me that he’ll sing it at the Appel Room in this rare New York appearance, which arrives in the wake of his highly-successful new album, “This is Where I Live.”
