In honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, Jazz at Lincoln Center honors this founding father of modern jazz – who was also, like Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, as great an entertainer as he was a musician – with a week of diverse shows and sets. The main event is the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, under the direction of trombonist Vincent Gardner, playing Gillespie’s big band masterpieces like “Things to Come.” (Rose Theater, Thursday January 26, Friday January 27, Saturday January 28) In the Appel Room, bassist Henriquez explores “The Latin Side of Dizzy Gillespie” with an all-star group including several notable Latin musicians, among them percussionist Pedrito Martinez and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana. And in Dizzy’s – the club named after the Great Gillespie himself – at least three trumpeters will play Dizzy’s music and sing his praises, Riley Mulherkar (Thursday January 26), Bruce Harris (Friday January 27 to Sunday January 29, 7:30PM shows), and Theo Croker (Friday January 27 to Sunday January 29, 9:30PM shows).
