To launch the 47th season of this highly successful series, artistic director Robert Kimball puts the spotlight on the jazzy early years of the iconic songwriter Harold Arlen. In order to illustrate the diversity of Arlen’s music, they’ve assembled a brilliant Broadway belter (Klea Blackhurst), a first-rate character man and comic (Stephen DeRosa, from “Boardwalk Empire”), and the remarkable blues and jazz singer (Catherine Russell). Backing them all up is the world’s greatest specialist in the hot jazz of the 1930s, Vince Giordano, with his 11-piece band The Nighthawks. There’ll also be multi-media in the form of rare filmed appearances by the composer himself.
