Most of us know Steve Tyrell through the movies (his appearances in the two “Father of the Bride” films) and his long string of best-selling albums (the latest is last year’s “That Lovin’ Feeling”). Which is somewhat ironic, in that Mr. Tyrell is essentially a live performer: the films and recordings can hardly be expected to capture the special chemistry he has with audiences, especially in the microscopically intimate space of the Carlyle, where he has been holding forth as the big ticket attraction for the last 12 holiday seasons. His deep Texas accent is raspy yet mellow, equal parts Dr. John and Dean Martin, and the arrangements, by the astute Alan Broadbent and various members of his band (Jon Allen, Quinn Johnson, David Finck, Bob Mann, Dave Mann, Kevin Winard) are deceptively easy on the ear and harmonically rich. (There’s a re-arrangement of the semi-nonsensical “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” that’s surprisingly profound.) Yet, more than anything, it’s his warm, engaging personality that keeps the sold-out crowds coming back– you get the feeling that nobody would mind if he just sat there for an hour telling stories about his two favorite subjects, the music industry and the New York Yankees.
