With a visible absence of any greens or fairways in Manhattan, you may not think of New York City as a golf haven. However, the area features some of the country’s finest and most challenging courses. There are courses in four of the five boroughs and many outstanding and highly regarded public and private courses are within a short drive from Manhattan.
Within an hour’s drive in any direction of the city, some of the world’s finest and best kept clubs can be found. Highbridge Hill is in New Jersey, while the Mohansic, Winged Foot and the famous Pete Dye designed Pound Ridge are located north of the city.
Bethpage State Park, on Long Island, is home to five golf courses including the very challenging Bethpage Black and Red courses. The Bethpage Black Course hosted the 2002 and 2009 US Open Golf Championships and is slated to host the 2019 PGA Championship and the 2024 The Barclays.
If you want to stay a little closer to the city, several challenging and exciting courses can be reached within a short train ride from anywhere in Manhattan.
Queens is home to the beautiful Forest Park, Flushing Meadows and Kissena Golf Courses. Forest Park has been proclaimed the best New York City golf course by Golf Guides USA. Flushing Meadows is a very fun outing that caters to golfers of all levels with an 18 hole “pitch and putt” course and mini golf. This is the only fully lighted course in the city. Kissena is a shorter course but very challenging for the average golfer.
The Bronx is home to Van Cortlandt Golf Course, the oldest public course in the US and the most accessible in the city. A ride on the #1 train will leave you just a short walk from the course. It is considered the home course of the city’s elite and can take several hours to complete. Famous members have included Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Andrew Giuliani.
The Dyker Beach Golf Club, located in the southwest corner of Brooklyn, next to Dyker Beach Park and the Atlantic Ocean, features tight fairways originally designed in 1897 by Tom Bendelow.
A gold standard among NYC courses is La Tourette. Located on Staten Island, this course features open fairways but will challenge any golfer with its small greens.
This brief sampling of the city’s best courses should be enough to keep you busy for some time. Try them all and get a feel for the environs of all five boroughs!
